Phasing out of default retirement age of 65

The Government is proposing to phase out the default retirement age of 65 from 6 April 2011.

There will be transitional arrangement for retirements notified before 6 April and where the retirement date is before 1st October 2011.

In future, as is now, the reasons for dismissal are likely to be as a result of capability and conduct and the normal dismissal procedures will need to be followed.

The current statutory requirements of six months’ notice of retirement and appeal will be dropped.
